you articulated so much of what i have been feeling during the inauguration! i have even noticed in my own personal life the rise of conservatism “talking points” as a “joke” amongst both men and women who previously have expressed no alignment with the values. it kind of reminds me of what ethel cain said recently about a lack of seriousness in public discourse lately, just as you reiterated here. sure, your cunty melania post might be made out of irony, but is it a situation to be ironic about? there is still consequence to irony i fear

yesss the ethel cain irony epidemic post has been living rent-free in my mind. it sums up a lot of how I've been feeling as the needle tips more and more conservative and people close to my age (mid 20s) navigate the ever-changing space. such a good point!

I love articles like this because it's evident that a woman openly supporting and standing by a power-hungry, rich man knows exactly what she's doing - regardless of whether she privately agrees with his decisions or not. You can't save someone that doesn't want to be saved.

I caught myself making one of these comments, and I really appreciate this essay. I think, at least for me, I'm so desperate to find some sense of common ground or "allyship" (VERY broadly speaking) in this administration. I, too, was a left-DC-for-inauguration girly.

i understand that mentality, it's definitely really uncertain times we're living in right now. i'm glad you were able to have a few moments of peace outside of DC!!

The parasocial desire to believe that a woman I never met has to somehow be against the chauvinistic behaviors of her tyrant husband, lol— wonderful piece, thank you

one of the few people on this app whose recommendations i almost always trust. this is no exception; bringing a moment of clarity is so important in this unique hellscape.

Thank you for writing this and for continuing to shed light on the utter absurdity of normalizing this administration and the people within it.. even Melania. The shift from reticence to casual acceptance to now a full on embrace of fascism is horrifying. Refusing to stay silent and not accepting the softening of those who directly or indirectly are taking away freedoms from the most vulnerable is vital. Keep calling it out!

I often think about this kind of humor, because this isn’t the first time people have done this. such as the viral sound on tiktok of their son, “i love my suitcase” or even when some of the complicit politicians kids, are meeting Trump along with their family and they are taking’s pictures, talking with Trump and people share one small tidbit of them looking away and mistaken it as “they are one of us”.

this article puts into words what I’ve been feeling. i especially resonate with your last paragraph — i too now live in a left leaning state and city (los angeles) but before i moved here, i spent the previous 12 years of my life in a conservative town in Florida and had the exact same things said to me in high school during the 2016 election and Trump’s first term. i also try my best to bite my tongue when i go back to visit my family, but my common sense and compassion typically get the best of me, and i revert back to that 15 year old girl who was always told she was too dramatic or too sensitive.

Omg I just wrote a piece about how society nowadays processes things by coping with humor/a lack of seriousness bordering on apathy and so it is so nice to see it’s not just me feeling this way! Also can’t even imagine what it would be like in DC during this time so glad you were able to take some time for yourself :)
